What It Is
Aqiqah is a sacrifice performed to express gratitude to Allah for the gift of a child. The Sunnah is two sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl, with the meat distributed to family, neighbors, and the poor.
Who It Applies To
Parents of a newborn child, performed on the seventh day after birth. It is a confirmed Sunnah - strongly recommended by the Prophet (peace be upon him).
When To Perform It
Ideally on the seventh day after the child is born. Can be performed later if missed. There is no expiration - it is never too late to fulfill this Sunnah.
A Sunnah of Gratitude
“Every child is pledged for his Aqiqah, which is sacrificed on his behalf on the seventh day, and he is named and his head is shaved.”
Abu Dawud
The Prophet (peace be upon him) performed Aqiqah for his grandsons Hasan and Husayn. It is a beautiful tradition that expresses gratitude for the gift of a child while feeding those in need. Your joy becomes someone else's meal.
